Learning From Previous Experiences to Create Good Energy Solar Redefined

A Message From Our Founder, Gary Adams

After hiring with one of the Nation’s Largest Solar Companies, SunPro Solar/ADT, I set out to “crush it” and repeat the success I’ve experienced during my 25-year sales career. Unfortunately, I realized that after one week of in-class training, I wasn’t fully prepared to build value to the homeowners who I was in front of.

A true Family-Business

I didn’t have a full understanding of the true power of going solar and becoming energy independent. I just didn’t fully believe I was providing value to the homeowner. As a sales professional, the biggest hurdle to climb is the proverbial “mountain of distrust.” You combine distrust with misinformation information, and the result is being politely walked to the door.

With that being said, I decided to reach out to my parents, who are affectionately known as “Momma Grace” and “Pops,” to practice on them. Both of my parents are pretty savvy with the direction our world is headed, but also truly understood the potential benefit of going solar and were interested in two main areas:

  • reducing their monthly utility bill
  • needing a tax haven that would reduce their annual tax liability

Identifying proper ROI

Once I began working with my parents, I started to realize that most, if not all, home and business owners would have similar areas of concern. However, as I began designing their solar panel system, I realized that the Return on Investment (ROI) timeline didn’t justify the total cost, but it would accomplish their primary goals.

I didn’t immediately express my concerns to my parents because, during my training, I was taught never to discuss ROI and fees with a potential customer! I wanted the sale and the commission, of course, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I would be inadvertently taking advantage of my parents. So, after identifying why the costs were so high and why the ROI was so long, during our final meeting to sign their documents, I expressed to my parents that I thought, based on my findings, I didn’t think that it was worth it. I revealed to them what I identified as the main issue, but they being amazing parents, wanted to support me; they signed anyway. As I made the three-hour drive home and contacted my Area Manager to let him know I had just closed my first deal, I couldn’t shake the feeling this wasn’t the best deal for them.

the beginning of Good Energy Solar Redefined

Over the next couple of days, piece by piece, I analyzed the overall financial components of my parent’s contract, and what I discovered was the reasoning behind their ROI being ridiculously long. The culprit was the exorbitant financing fees (which we were trained never to disclose) and install/equipment costs. At that point, I realized I had to make two important decisions:

  1. To get my parents out of the contract and walk away from a $6,000 commission.
  2. To fire myself and become a business owner/entrepreneur.

I eventually made peace with my decisions, and Good Energy Solar Redefined was born. In the end, I was able to save my parents approximately $20k, decrease their ROI timeline from 12-15 years to 7-9 years, and also earn a reasonable profit. Good Energy Solar Redefined ultimately was birthed from a desire to provide a solution to an industry that has its own set of challenges (common but not so unique). The mission of Good Energy Solar Redefined is to always provide a friendly, seamless, and stress-free sales process from beginning to end!
